attractions available. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad carried iron, workers, and vacationers from Asheville NC through the deep forests, to Murphy NC from the late 1880’s to 1985. Today, the Great Smoky Mountains Railway operates as a mountain attraction and heritage railroad, taking visitors and tourists on a tour through the Nantahala, Pisgah and Cherokee Forests and has been featured in three Hollywood motion pictures: The Fugitive, My Fellow Americans and Forces of Nature.
The train stops along several depots, and each area has its own unique quality, adding memories to each ride. Dillsboro is a charming little village of artists and
craftspeople and is known as the beginning point
of the Great Smokey Mountains. Bryson City, is
located just on the edge of the Great Smoky
Mountains National Park and is typically a stop
for travelers heading to various parts of the Smokies. Andrews is a scenic town located in Cherokee County in the heart of the Snowbird Mountains. All of these sleepy, little mountain towns have a long, rich history. All were founded in the 1800’s and each retains its own unique character.
The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad offers a variety of different trips and themed rides. Some trips last only 2.5 hours and other excursions can last up to 7 hours. Each year the Great Smoky Mountains Railway hosts several special events and unique train rides, while maintaining their usual old standbys. The Nantahala Gorge Excursion is probably the most popular train ride the railway offers and takes visitors through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park over Fontana Lake and through the Nantahala Gorge. The second most popular train rides are the dinner rides. Diners can enjoy a gourmet meal, cocktails and wine aboard the Saturday Night Gourmet Dinner Train. With first class seating and a four course meal, the dinner train is a delightful trip to take and departs from the Dillsboro Depot. For a more adventurous dinner experience, reserve your seat on the Friday Night Mystery Train, a train ride with not only a fabulous dinner, but a twist as well. Vacationers looking to take advantage of the phenomenal white water rafting rivers always get a kick out of the popular Raft and Rail Excursion. The train goes over the Nantahala River Gorge and on a wet and wild rafting trip down the Nantahala River. As always when reserving your trip you’ll need to specify what type of rail car you would like to ride in. You may choose from open air cars, coach, crown coach, or a club car. Restroom facilities are available throughout each.
 Other special rides are offered throughout the year at various holiday times. For instance, during Valentine’s Day riders can experience the Sweetheart’s Gourmet Dining Train and October brings train rides like the October Leaf Season and the Oktoberfest Beer Train.
